A

Acanthosis

This is a common feature seen in obese persons where there is blackening of arm pits and groins and neck


Amblyopia

Is also called lazy eye which moves in or out when the good eye tends to look at things. Usually causes reduced vision.


Anemia

Anemia means lack of blood. But to be very specific it is low haemoglobin value in the blood test.  The haemoglobin value is usually seen in a blood report called Full Blood Count or FBC or it is also called CBC or Complete Blood Count. If the haemogblobin valuse is below 10 g/dL it is anemia.


Anisometropia

Unequal focus between the two eyes causing poor vision


Ankle brachial index

The difference in the blood pressure of the ankle and the upper arm.  This is measured by a hand held doppler scanner


Anosmia

 Loss of sensation of smell


Anticoagulants

Anticoagulants are blood thinners - warfarin, enoxaprin


Asplenia

This is disease state characterized by the absence of spleen or failure of spleen to carry out its normal tasks


Astigmatism

Astigmatism means both distant and near vision are blurry
