16. ABDOMINAL THRUSTS - HEIMLICH MANEUVER
ABDOMINAL THRUSTS - HEIMLICH MANEUVER (HM)
HM IN STANDING OR SEATED VICTIM
1) Stand behind the victim
2) Put your arms round the waist
3) Keep your fist over the center of the abdomen in between the lower
end of the breastbone and navel
4) Fist is kept with the thumb over the abdomen
5) Put your other hand over the fist
6) Give several rapid thrusts directed little upwards towards the heart
7) Thrusts should be separated by a several seconds pause
8) Keep on giving the manual thrusts until the foreign body is ejected
or the victim becomes unresponsive
9) Then follow the HM in an unconscious victim

HM IN AN UNCONSCIOUS VICTIM
1)Place the victim on back face up
2) Kneel over the victim with your knees by the side of the victim's
thighs
3) Place the heel of 1 hand over the center of the abdomen in between the lower
end of the breast bone and navel
4) Place your other hand over the first
5) Give a thrust directed down and up using your body weight without
bending the elbows
6) Give 6-10 thrusts hard and fast in quick succession
7) There should be complete release of pressure in between the thrusts
8) Open the victim's mouth and see whether FB can be removed from
the mouth
9) Put victims head into head-tilt and chin lift
10) Try ventilating the victim
11) Continue steps 5-10 until FB is ejected and victim breathes normal
or until you succeed in ventilating the victim even if the FB is in
